Company Background
Rolls Royce is probably one of the most prestigious and famous engineering companies in the world.
They have a leading position providing power for land, sea and air in the civil aerospace, defence,
marine and energy markets.
Rolls Royce marine division focus on power, propulsion and motion control solutions, serving over
2,000 customers with equipment installed on 20,000 commercial and naval vessels.
The Challenge
Rolls Royce motion control systems are renowned throughout the maritime world for their performance
and reliability. Their Fin Stabiliser systems not only improve safety and vessel performance but
they also increase passenger comfort and reduce fuel usage.
The system senses the degree of ship movement and adjusts the angle of hydrofoil shaped fins projecting
from the vessel to reduce rolling by 80%-90% compared with that of an unstabilised vessel.
Rolls Royce needed a reliable computer to manage this system which could thrive in harsh marine conditions
and also complied with the EU's Marine Equipment directives.
The Solution
After extensive testing the JLT10021 was chosen not only because of its extensive hardware features,
quality and durability but also because of the service and support which fulfils Rolls Royce's demands.
Stabilising systems are a vital component in many vessels including super yachts, ferries and container ships
and now thanks to close collaboration with JLT, the Rolls Royce system displays a vessels status and allows easier control of
functions across a new user interface.
Benefits
By using a single unit to manage the Fin Stabilising system, Rolls Royce has
simplified installation, management and support of the system whilst maintaining
their legendary reliability.
